The New Look Silhouette

No discussion of 1950s fashion is complete without mentioning Christian Dior’s iconic “New Look” silhouette. Introduced in 1947, the New Look celebrated an hourglass figure with a nipped-in waist, full skirts, and pointed bust lines. Dresses and suits featured padded shoulders, cinched waists, and A-line or full skirts that accentuated a womanly shape. To achieve the New Look at home, ladies donned bullet bras, girdles, crinolines, and multiple layers of structured petticoats under their skirts. It took quite an undergarment arsenal to create those coveted curves and volume!
